It's past 6 PM when Tempest finally emerges from the death-rest he had entered. As soon as he had exited the shower, Temp had promptly collapsed into his and Cillian Quinn's bed. He'd hogged the blankets, too. Only twice had he woken up; once before noon to piss and another time to stand in the kitchen and drink water endlessly around two. If Cillian had been home for either to see, he would have seen how he was bleary and oblivious as he staggered about.[break][break]

How the lines of Death's touch stained his naked body. The rag and ugly scarring on his throat from his corrupting touch.[break][break]

When Temp finally, finally, comes from their bedroom half dressed, sitting down heavily on a chair, he would grumble out a sleep-rough 'morning' as he wiped his eyes.[break][break]

He finishes pulling a black turtleneck over his chest, hiding the remains of what had been the gaping wounds that had killed him.[break][break]

"Do 'ya wanna go to that Johto Buffet in Oldale?" Is slurred out; his stomach rumbles loudly. Apparently he'd not actually eaten his fill last night to make up for lost time. While that particular buffet wasn't the... highest of quality or authenticity, it was cheap, filling, and would have more than enough food for Temp to gorge himself on without having to cook it himself.[break][break]

He doesn't talk about the fight from the night before.

Cillian sits with his guilt for hours.[break][break]

He doesn't sleep.[break][break]

Curled on the faded floral-print couch in the living room, he delves into the monotony of Rocket reports to escape from his own head. It only half-works, and he finds himself having to read reports two or three times over to really take in the information. Even when the laptop's glow begins to strain his tired eyes, he doesn't dare to intrude upon Temp's rest.[break][break]

He isn't angry anymore. The anger has long since evaporated, leaving him with traces of fear and an overwhelming, suffocating guilt. He catches a glimpse of Temp stumbling naked to the bathroom and can't take his eyes off the purple-black pattern of veins at his husband's throat.[break][break]

You ripped my throat out.[break][break]

Cillian blinks and realises that although he's scrolled to the bottom of the page, he's retained nothing of what's contained in the report. Frustrated with himself, he closes out of his e-mail and starts composing a report of his own, instead. To Walsh, detailing his side of what had happened between he and Temp as soon as the Sanguivore had stumbled home. I killed him, he writes, heart trapped in his throat. He erases it and tries again. I thought he was a threat.[break][break]

His husband. The love of his life. He should have known-[break][break]

He's barely written a few sentences when a gruff greeting startles him out of his own head.[break][break]

He doesn't know what to say. To return the 'morning' as though everything was fine seems criminal, but to ignore Temp seems even more cruel. He opens his mouth with the intent to reply, but the words stick in his throat.[break][break]

He closes the laptop.[break][break]

He wants to leave. He feels like he can't breathe.[break][break]

When he dares to look at Tempest Quinn, the guilt tears a fresh wound in his chest. The horrible wound, covered by fabric as though it had never existed at all.[break][break]

He shakes his head, mute, and tears his gaze away.

Cillian Quinn doesn't answer him, at least not out loud, and Tempest feels a flicker of annoyance. Was Cillian still mad at him after last night? Probably. The two of them very rarely actually went to bed angry at each other. He'd just been too exhausted to deal with their combined emotional baggage in any healthy way. Was still tired, if the way his eyes burned for more sleep told him, but was rested enough to try and use his brain.[break][break]

Still, his stomach calls to him.[break][break]

"We can order something. You eaten anything today?" A question asked that Temp already knows the answer. Cillian, if Tempest knew him, hadn't eaten yet (or well, recently) and was running off pure angst, shadows, and cigarettes or whatever it was that fueled the Galarian. There was also the want to hear the other actually speak; in something other than the rough tones from last night.[break][break]

They'd need to address that. But not quite yet. It wasn't a wound that Temp was quite prepared to rip back open.

Temp doesn't obey his silent pleas, however. Whether it's stubborn resilience or simple ignorance to how Cillian was feeling, his husband offers another option as if the food had been the problem.[break][break]

It wasn't the food. It wasn't Temp, either.[break][break]

Cillian's not the best at apologizing on a good day. He'd been taught to grovel and beg by those who'd raised him, not to express his regrets in a genuine or healthy way. Temp was usually good at coaxing him, but when his problem was with Temp, Cillian just feels lost.[break][break]

And no apology would reverse the damage that's been done.[break][break]

"I can cook." His voice is naturally quiet, but the sort of quiet that speaks to cold authority and an expectation to be heard. Now, he sounds as uncertain as he feels. He still doesn't look at Temp, instead busying himself by picking at a loose thread in his pants. "What do you want?"

The silent pleading is not ignored, just misinterpreted. Cillian had to still be upset with him was all; but the two of them would warm back up soon. They would apologize and kiss and everything would work out. They would work out. It was a bet that Temp would make over and over because he knew he couldn't lose.[break][break]

The you don't need to cook for me sits on the tip of his tongue, a breath away from reaching the air.[break][break]

But Cillian Quinn had always had a problem with apologies.[break][break]

"Okay." Is what he says instead. Cillian was clearly tired and stressed and needed care as much as Tempest did. But there was love in actions, and he would accept the love that was being offered in this offer.[break][break]

He mulls it over as he thinks about what he wanted. Temp's body was craving salt and meat and other heavy things.[break][break]

"Just something filling." Even if the atmosphere was unsure, was still tense, he dares to try and offer an easy smile to his husband. It sits wrong on his face, now, large fangs pushing his lips upwards and shining in the light.[break][break]

A reminder of what he was now.

Temp's unsettling smile goes unnoticed. The thread that Cillian picks at has gone from a mere imperfection to a future hole. He gives it a final tug before relenting.[break][break]

Something filling is vague, but years of living on a grunt's budget in Kanto has at least afforded Cillian with a certain creativity in the kitchen. He uncurls from the couch and frowns at the ache in his joints, hardly having realised how long he's been sitting in the same position.[break][break]

A quick scan of the fridge and pantry reveals the devastation Temp has managed to wreak upon their supplies in the span of a night, but Cillian rescues a can of pasta sauce and some noodles that survived. He'd normally throw in a host of fresh vegetables, but anything perishable had gone bad in his weeks of grief. A half-block of cheese and a tube of ground beef transform what would have been a poor man's spaghetti into something more akin to goulash.[break][break]

If nothing else, it certainly ticked the box for filling.[break][break]

His stomach growls, mouth watering as the scent of the frying beef fills the small apartment kitchen, alerting Cillian to how hungry his body was even if eating was the last thing on his mind.[break][break]

But when it's finished cooking, he takes only a small portion for himself. Temp is offered the lion's share, both as further apology and because his husband still looks half out of his grave.

Golden eyes follow Cillian Quinn as he gets up to go deal with the mess of their small kitchen. Tempest thinks about following after him, wanting to be close, but his body feels heavy and tired still. So he stays still, eyes closing as the smell of cooking meat and pasta fill their home. He might have dozed off, too, if Cillian hadn't roused him with food.[break][break]

"This looks delicious." A forkful of cheesy noodles are twirled. "Are you sure that's all you want?"[break][break]

The helping that Tempest had been given was very generous; no doubt he would be able to eat it, but he wanted to make sure that Cillian didn't go hungry for his sake. It's only after he would try to coax Cillian to take more before he starts to devour his own food like a man starved.[break][break]

The quiet of their forks tinkling on the porcelain bowls.[break][break]

When his food is half finished, Tempest gives a deep sigh and sits back in his chair.[break][break]

"I'm sorry about last night."

I don't think I could manage much more is swallowed down so as not to make Temp consider why Cillian's stomach might not agree with him. The last thing he needs to do is make Temp feel bad for him.[break][break]

He's glad for the excuse of food, no matter how small the portion, to keep his silence a little longer.[break][break]

He doesn't expect the apology, and it stumps him for several seconds as the gears in his brain grind to a halt. Unsure of exactly what to say, he settles on, "S'not you who needs to apologize."[break][break]

It's not quite an I'm sorry, but it's close.

Finally. Even if it's quiet, Tempest is glad to hear his husband's voice again.[break][break]

"You didn't yell at me and throw stuff around like a toddler." He tries to half joke, even if he still feels terrible about it. There is also the fact he almost killed him. Idly, his eyes drop down to catch the vicious bite mark he had left behind on Cillian. It barely peeks over the collar of the blond's shirt from here. Tempest's stomach churns with guilt.[break][break]

Then it lulls into silence again. Tempest looks down into his bowl, unsure what else to say.

He never yells. Temp knows that.[break][break]

Temp also knows, however, that the biting chill to Cillian's voice was as good as screaming when it came to conveying his rage.[break][break]

I'm just glad you didn't throw anything at me is also swallowed, even if it's the truth. He's used to violence following raised voices, and so Temp's 'tantrum' had seemed tame in comparison. Reasonable, even.[break][break]

The silence between them seems to stretch to an uncomfortable degree. So uncomfortable that even Cillian can't stand it, and he chokes out the words that have been building in the back of his throat.[break][break]

"I know you weren't trying to die." He should've said as much last night, instead of being nasty about it, but anger had got the better of them both. He's not done, though. "That didn't make it hurt any less when you did."[break][break]

He tries to keep his emotions in check as a barrier to inflicting unintended guilt, but he can't help the tears that blur his vision at the memory of loss.

There is a quiet relief that is smoothed over when Cillian Quinn says that, a hackle that can relax that Tempest didn't even realize he was still holding up. He hadn't wanted to die, only to ensure that his husband and Hitoshi Inoue and howard slayte lived. But what about last night? The panic and dawning horror. Of almost allowing Lugia to take him. The final caress of parting given to Cillian.[break][break]

It didn't really feel like that anymore, though, did it?[break][break]

The choice had been taken. But would Tempest had even made the choice to start if it was still his?[break][break]

For so long he had always thought that death his only purpose. Now, though... he wasn't sure.[break][break]

"I didn't mean to hurt you." It comes out quiet. Tempest pushes a stray noodle around his bowl.[break][break]

There isn't much more he can really say on the matter.[break][break]

A deep, shaking sigh is drawn into his chest. Slowly, putting his bowl down on the side table first, he inches closer to offer his hand to Cillian. To try and share comfort in the other's touch.

Yet Tempest wasn't the one ultimately at fault for the growing rift between them, was he? It was Cillian's own paranoia and brutality that was the problem. Never before had he thought that Temp was too good for him, that Temp deserved better, until his own hands had robbed the life from the one he loved most.[break][break]

It didn't matter that Yveltal could undo the physical damage.[break][break]

The mental toll had already been taken.[break][break]

He's working up the courage to put his feelings into words when Temp takes his hand. Selfishly, Cillian swallows his storm of sorrow and allows himself that small comfort.[break][break]

Just for a little while.

There is a weight in Cillian's words that Tempest isn't quite ready to face yet. So he stays quiet and lets it sit.

They sit in reasonable silence for a bit.[break][break]

Not quiet comfortable for Tempest. There is still a tension that lingers just below the calm surface. It waits like a snake ready to strike, unseen and unknown. He hates it; being with Cillian Quinn hasn't made him feel like this since they were dating. Even then, it was more the butterflies from a giddy early relationship and learning to navigate the other.[break][break]

Tempest mind wanders. He thinks of the brief glance of himself in the mirror last night.[break][break]

"Am I ugly now?"[break][break]

Is that why you won't look at me?[break][break]

Sudden. Quiet. Tempest had always been more vain than people gave him credit. It was easy to play it off but he had always valued how he looked. Had always thought it was one of his very few worths in life. If people liked to look at him, maybe they would like him despite all the obvious flaws.[break][break]

Gold eyes trail down to stare at inky, stained black fingers. The veins are red and glow faintly under the skin.[break][break]

"I don't want to look."

The question seems so bizarre to Cillian, so unfathomable. Tempest looked like an angel. Perhaps not heaven-sent, but Cillian knows he's damned to hell if such a thing exists.[break][break]

"No." His voice softens, and he squeezes the hand he'd taken. "No, Temp. You're beautiful."[break][break]

He forces himself to look at his husband, now. Not at the scars that mar his neck but at the pulsing red lines of Yveltal's mark that accent his lover's skin. Stark against its deep colour.[break][break]

Beautiful.[break][break]

If there's any monster between us, it's me.
